Teen sensation Coco Gauff returns to the hallowed turf of Wimbledon, the scene of her breakout moment. It was here that she defeated Venus Williams in the first round back in 2019, and went on to become the youngest player to reach the fourth round at a Grand Slam since 1996. Since then, she has carried the responsibility of being the future of tennis.

The Georgia native has had a fantastic start to the 2022 season. She has climbed to a career high of 13th in the world rankings, and has been a consistent performer in tournaments. Last week the 18-year-old reached the final of a Grand Slam for the first time, becoming the youngest Grand Slam finalist since Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon in 2004.

Serena Williams has not played since Wimbledon 2021 when she retired injured against Aliaksandra Sasnovich. The seven-time champion has not put her name on the entry list, but given her ranking is currently 1223 there would be little point in that anyway. If she’s fit enough the Wimbledon officials will give the box office star a wild card entry, and when Serena takes to the court you can rule nothing out.

The former world number one has reached the final in four of her last five Wimbledon visits, agonizingly losing her last two finals in both 2018 and 2019. It is very hard to gauge where her game is after missing so much tennis, but she will be hoping she can stay healthy enough to be able to have one last run at the Wimbledon title.

It has been five years since her last Grand Slam title, at the Australian Open in 2017. She is still chasing that one further elusive title to bring her level with the record set by Margaret Court of 24 Grand Slam titles. Time is running out for the 40-year-old Williams, but grass is her favorite surface and Wimbledon is the site of some of her greatest triumphs in an incredible career. The 28-year old Jessica Pegula was ranked a lowly 632 in the world just five years ago but she has seen a dramatic upturn in her career in the past couple of years that has seen her turn into a regular grand slam contender.

Pegula has broken into the Top 10 of the world for the first time, overtaking compatriot Danielle Collins as the top-ranked American player. She’s a player going places, winning a career best 36 matches last season, and she already has reached 23 wins in 2022. She is coming off the back of an clay-court campaign in which she finished as runner-up at the Madrid Open, and followed it up by advancing to the quarterfinals at Roland Garros.

The New Yorker has never made it beyond the second round here at Wimbledon, and she has little grass court experience to fall back on. If she is going to be in with a shot of the title, then she is going to have to play the tennis of her life.

It has been a frustrating start to the season for 27-year old Jennifer Brady. She’s not played competitively since being forced to retire from her second-round match against Jelena Ostapenko at Cincinnati in August last year, and was forced to miss the Australian Open and the entire clay court season.

It came at an inopportune time for Brady, who had just advanced to her first grand slam final at Melbourne Park, losing in straight sets to Naomi Osaka. She had also broken into the top 15 in the world and had made her Olympics debut.

The American star doesn’t have the best of records on grass, she has only won two matches at Wimbledon in her career. She will be hoping this is the ideal venue to signal her return to the game, but it is a big ask to come back and compete straight away after such a long layoff. Danielle Collins’ route to get to the top of tennis has been unusual for high-level players. Rather than work her way up through the junior circuit and smaller tours at a young age, Collins instead made a name for herself in college tennis and has impressively reached the heights of ninth in the world.

She made it to her first major singles final at the 2022 Australian Open in January, where she was beaten by now retired home favorite Ashleigh Barty. She’s yet to advance beyond the round of 32, but she has the power and determination to make a positive impression at Wimbledon.

There have to be some major doubts about the health and form of Sofia Kenin. The former world number 4 has not competed since Indian Wells earlier this year. Thankfully she is now back to full training following her injury layoff, but she has missed a lot of tennis.

Kenin took the world by storm by claiming her maiden major at the 2020 Australian Open. She defeated Ashleigh Barty in the semi-finals, and came through an intense battle with Garbine Muguruza in the final. She followed this up with a run to the Roland Garros final the same year. The tennis world was her oyster, but she hasn’t really built on this incredible start to her career.

The 23-year old has made the trip to Wimbledon three times, each time getting knocked out in just the second round. Last year she was dismantled by Madison Brengle, making one unenforced error for every minute on court. With a poor grass court record, and her disappointing injury disrupted season thus far, it’s hard to make much of a case for her this time round.
